Interpretive Summary: This paper describes the complete genome sequence of a bacterium (Staphylococcus shinii) that was found in vine mealybug (Planococcus ficus), an important insect pest of grapes. Staphylococcus shinii was originally discovered and described from plants, which makes this the first report and description of S. shinii from a plant-feeding insect. Because S. shinii can be harmful to some insects, this genome sequence will be used to study S. shinii as a potential biological control agent for insect pests such as vine mealybug.

Technical Abstract: This resource announcement describes the complete genome sequence of a Staphylococcus shinii isolate obtained from vine mealybug (Planococcus ficus), an important vineyard pest insect. The S. shinii species was originally characterized from environmental samples and some strains are entomopathogenic. This genome sequence will facilitate further characterization for potential insect biological control.
