Interpretive Summary: Lactococcus lactis is a bacterial species that is often associated with benefits, however some strains can cause infections in animals, including fish. Researchers at Mississippi State University cooperated with scientists at the USDA ARS Warmwater Aquaculture Research Unit and St. George's University to sequence the genome of Lactococcus lactis isolate S11-599. This isolate was cultured from the brain of a silver carp, which was found along the Mississippi River where several other fish mortalities had been reported. A complete, circularized chromosome and a plasmid were assembled from the sequencing data. Comparison of the genome from S11-599 with genomes of other Lactococcus lactis isolates suggest S11-599 may represent a novel subspecies of L. lactis.

Technical Abstract: There is just a single word (bolded) that has been changed if it is easier to just edit the existing: The complete genome of Lactococcus lactis isolate S11-599 is presented, recovered from the brain of a silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) during a mass mortality event affecting invasive Asian carp in the Mississippi River.
