It was developed through cooperative research conducted by USDA-ARS, the University of Florida, and the Florida Sugar Cane League. CP 14-1933 is resistant to brown rust and sugarcane mosaic virus and moderately resistant to orange rust, smut, leaf scald, and ratoon stunt disease. However, it is less tolerant to freezing temperatures compared to reference cultivars. Additionally, CP 14-1933 has superior yield and disease resistance traits compared to the widely grown cultivar CP 96-1252, suggesting that it could have a positive impact on sugarcane production in Florida. Technical Abstract: ‘CP 14-1933’ (Reg. No. CV-224, PI 708609) was released for Florida in July 2024 for commercial cultivation on organic soils. This cultivar was developed through cooperative research conducted by USDA-ARS, the University of Florida, and the Florida Sugar Cane League. CP 14-1933 originated from a cross (CPX11-1041) between a female parent ('CP 07-2460') and a male parent (‘CP 06-2335’). CP 14-1933 is resistant to orange rust, leaf scald, Sugarcane mosaic virus strain E, and brown rust, and it harbors the Bru1 locus associated with brown rust resistance. It is tolerant to smut and ratoon stunt disease. CP 14-1933 is significantly (P < .05) less tolerant to freezing temperatures than the reference cultivars. The average fiber content of CP 14-1933 was 122.0 kg Mg-1, lower than that of the reference cultivars. Yield data from 3 harvest years (plant cane, first ratoon, and second ratoon) across five locations in Stage 4 on organic soils indicated that the cane and sugar yield of CP 14-1933 were comparable to those of the reference cultivars ‘CP 00-1101’ and ‘CP 96-1252’. However, the commercially recoverable sugar (CRS) of CP 14-1933 in all the crop years was significantly higher than the CRS of CP 96-1252. The economic index (EI) for the second ratoon crop of CP 14-1933 was significantly higher (P < .05) by 28% compared with the EI of CP 96-1252. CP 14-1933 has the potential to positively impact sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) production in Florida, as it exhibits yield and disease resistance traits comparable to those of the widely grown cultivar CP 96-1252. |
