Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Managing an insect pest requires selection of a pesticide best suited for its control. This may be a contact or translaminar insecticide. When treating for foliage attacking pests, like aphids, translaminar insecticides are a good choice. Be aware that consistent use of the highest rate of a product may lead to resistance selection in the pest population. Switching between insecticide classes (those with different IRAC numbers) is also advised to reduce resistance development. When an application volume is too low or too high, maximum uptake of the active ingredient by the leaf may not occur leading to poor pest control. Surfactants and adjuvants can assist with leaf uptake of the insecticide. Canopy density and tree height will determine if higher or lower application volume is needed for sufficient foliar coverage.
