DOI: https://doi.org/10.17504/protocols.io.eq2lyxpqrgx9/v1 Interpretive Summary: Some types of antibiotics are becoming less effective at curing diseases due to antibiotic resistance. One particularly dangerous type of resistance happens when an infectious disease causing bacteria makes a substance called Extended-spectrum ß-lactamase (ESBL). This protocol describes step-by-step instructions for how to perform a test that is used to determine if a particular bacteria can produce ESBL. It works by growing the bacteria, and then using antibiotic-infused discs to see which ones inhibit bacterial growth and by how much. Technical Abstract: Disc (or Disk) diffusion by the Kirby-Bauer method is a standardized technique for testing rapidly growing pathogens. This procedure describes the steps for the ESBL antibiotic susceptibility disc diffusion test. |
