Interpretive Summary: Leafhoppers and treehoppers cause millions of dollars in crop loss every year. In order to identify agricultural pests, it is important to know the distribution and recognize all life stages. All life stages of a treehopper species are described and illustrated. It is a pest of chayote, an important Neotropical crop staple and is also imported to the USA. In 2024, the USA imported 505.45 metric tons of fresh chayote, valued at $573 million, and exported 47.06 metric tons, valued at $64 million. The detailed description and illustrations of this pest species will be useful for research scientists and federal regulatory agencies such as the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, which routinely intercepts insect immature stages requiring identification.

Technical Abstract: The last immature stage of the New World treehopper Campylocentrus nigris Funkhouser, 1930 is described for the first time. Detailed figures of the adult are also provided, as well as new records, data on its behavior, distribution for Costa Rica and host plants. Panama is a new country record for the species.
