Summary of taxonomy changes ratified by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) from the Plant Viruses Subcommittee, 2025. Journal of General Virology. 106(7). Article e002114. https://doi.org/10.1099/jgv.0.002114. DOI: https://doi.org/10.1099/jgv.0.002114 Interpretive Summary: Scientific research and possible regulations for viruses requires agreement on their scientific names. The International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) Plant Virus Subcommittee decides the taxonomic classification of most viruses infecting plants. There are 22 study groups that cover 27 virus families. Virus taxonomy is continuously updated and sometimes revised. The taxonomic revisions are usually made at the order, family, genus, and species levels. This report describes recent revisions whereby one new order was created, several new families and genera were created, and several species names were rejected by consolidating them with already existing species. These changes help clarify the proper taxonomic status of existing and newly identified plant viruses. Technical Abstract: In March 2025, following the annual International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) ratification vote, newly proposed taxa were added to those under the mandate of the Plant Viruses Subcommittee. One new order, three new families, six new genera, two new subgenera, and 206 new species were created. One genus was abolished and split. Eight species were abolished and eight were renamed. One family and four genera were moved. This article presents the updated taxonomy in the Plant Viruses Subcommittee remit as now accepted by the ICTV. |
