Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: In 2013, under the guidance of a robust scientific advisory panel formed to help direct mushroom research, the Mushroom Council held its inaugural summit aimed at examining the (then) current landscape of research linking mushroom consumption to human health. In a subsequent 2019 meeting, the council assessed progress and established priorities: identify and characterize the range of bioactives present in the main varieties of mushrooms consumed by Americans for inclusion in USDA’s FoodData Central database; investigate the impact of mushroom consumption on human health through preclinical and clinical trials; and communicate new findings to the research community, health professionals, and consumers. Recently, a group of researchers with expertise in food toxicology, nutrient composition analysis, cognition, and metabolism attended a follow-up mini-summit organized by the Mushroom Council to update current findings, reflect on research accomplishments, identify continuing or new research gaps, and set priorities going forward. This present publication aims to summarize and share the expert insights and novel findings presented at the 2024 mini-summit.
