Progress toward pecan breeding modernization in 2024. Pecan South. 57(11):12-15. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: This invited article outlines research progress made by the USDA in pecan breeding and the repository throughout 2024. This includes permit acquisition to pursue biological and plant disease research in the new facility, communicating the scope of standard pecan breeding efforts throughout a typical year, and plans for repository expansion. Leaf tissue sampling for DNA sequencing for nearly 5,000 pecans and 500 hickories sourced from stakeholders, public, and private repositories was accomplished. Future plans to establish new breeding tests, address shading and irrigation issues in the repository, and requesting feedback on our public website are discussed. |
