Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Specialization of agricultural production has resulted in a separation of crop and animal production. This separation has resulted in areas where the accumulation of manure is concentrated. As a fertilizer substitute, manure competes with commercial fertilizers. There are several tradeoffs associated with the use of manure and commercial fertilizers. Taking advantage of the opportunities to expand manure nutrient recycling across the North American beef and dairy supply chains offers an alternative for sustainable management. This talk explores how manure management can recycle resources within agricultural production systems to enhance soil health in drylands of the USA.
