Interpretive Summary: The Pacific Northwest region produces nearly all of the processed red raspberry volume in the United States. The Washington State University red raspberry breeding program is one of the primary public research programs serving this industry through cultivar development. WSU has released a new commercially elite raspberry cultivar ‘WSU 2188’ trademarked as ‘Cascade LegacyTM’. ‘WSU 2188’ is a mid-season cultivar that shows improvements over existing cultivar standards in terms of machine harvested yields, fruit size, fruit firmness and quality for processing, ease of fruit release, and potential as a dual purpose cultivar with suitable characteristics for fresh market. Trialing of the new cultivar was assisted by the USDA-ARS/Oregon State University cooperative small fruit breeding program in Oregon and the BC Berry Cultivar Development Inc. breeding program in British Columbia.

Technical Abstract: ‘WSU 2188’ is a new floricane-fruiting raspberry cultivar (Rubus idaeus L.) released by Washington State University (WSU) and marketed as Cascade Legacy™ in the United States. ‘WSU 2188’ produces large, firm fruit in the mid-season that are well suited to machine harvesting and for processing. Because of its flavor, large size, firmness, attractive appearance, and ease of fruit release, ‘WSU 2188’ is also suitable for fresh market use. ‘WSU 2188’ appears to have good levels of tolerance to Phytophthora rubi (Man in ‘t Veld, 2007) in field trials.
