Interpretive Summary: Cache Valley Virus (CVV) is an arbovirus transmitted between mosquitos and several vertebrate species. It is a zoonotic disease not widely studied in humans. Infections in sheep and goats during pregnancy is a growing animal welfare issue as it can result in embryo or pregnancy loss, fetal malformation, and dystocia. Through this investigation with collaborators from the Centers for Disease Control, Arkansas Department of Health, USDA Agricultural Research Service, and Arkansas Game and Fish, we documented that CVV is circulating in Arkansas and represents a risk to human and animal health. Additional research is needed to identify reservoirs and local vectors of CVV, and opportunities for control measures to help prevent human and animal cases of CVV disease. These results are important for veterinarians, the sheep and goat industry, and human health associated with meningitis and encephalitis.

Technical Abstract: Cache Valley virus (CVV), a mosquito-borne virus, can cause neuroinvasive disease in humans and has reproductive impacts in ungulates. In 2023, CVV ribonucleic acid was detected in an aborted lamb from an Arkansas flock. We conducted a One Health investigation to document the occurrence of CVV in Arkansas.
