Interpretive Summary: Vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) is responsible for vesicular stomatitis (VS), a disease of significant importance in livestock. The disease is characterized by the appearance of vesicles in the mouth, tongue, hoofs and udders that can impact milk and meat production and can lead to severe economic losses due to trade restrictions and quarantines. The virus is endemic from the northern region of South America to southern Mexico. Very little is known about the evolutionary dynamics associated with the maintenance of this virus in endemic regions or with the emergence of epidemic strains that cause outbreaks in the United States. Therefore, acquisition of more sequences from isolates within the endemic region is critical. In this manuscript we report the complete-coding sequence of a VSV isolate that was recovered from a naturally infected cow in Chiapas, Mexico; a region where this disease is endemic. This sequence will be useful for future epidemiological studies aimed at improving our understanding of how these viruses are maintained in endemic regions and evolve to cause sudden outbreaks in non-endemic areas.

Technical Abstract: Here we report the near full-length genome sequence of a Vesiculovirus new jersey isolate obtained from a naturally infected cow (Bos taurus) in the state of Chiapas, Mexico. This sequence will support future efforts to improve our understanding of the evolutionary dynamics of this pathogen in endemic regions of Mexico.
