Food Industry Asia Annual Member Event, Singapore. November 15-16, 2024, virtual participation Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Recent research indicates that it is possible to follow recommendations from the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) while primarily consuming energy from "ultra-processed" foods (UPFs) as defined by the Nova categorization system. The results of this research appear to conflict with results from most observational studies on UPFs as well as the only randomized controlled trial published on the topic to date. Additional research is needed to clarify the role of UPFs in healthy dietary patterns especially since UPFs are included or are being considered for inclusion in dietary guidance around the world. This presentation will also address research needs for nutrition and UPFs moving forward, including highlighting outcomes of the 2023 Research Roadmap workshop that outlines next steps needed for advancing understanding of the mechanisms behind associations between UPF consumption and adverse health consequences. |
