Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The USDA National Plant Germplasm System's maize collection includes more than 20,000 accessions from around the world. Currently, approximately 75% of the collection is available for distribution upon request. As the collection matures, and more accessions are added to the collection (e.g., materials with expired Plant Variety Protection (PVP) certificates), it is essential for curators to find efficiencies in managing nursery regenerations and data collection. Selecting and arranging accessions by estimated phenology in the regeneration field is an easy way to increase the efficiency of working a field where all pollinations are made manually. Phenology data is also essential characterization information for maize breeders to choose materials conducive to their growing region. As of July 2024, there were just 3,517 accessions with flowering data included on the National Plant Germplasm System's website, GRIN-Global.
