The wax apple is a tropical fruit tree grown in Southeast Asia. Production of this fruit in Taiwan is valued over 100 million dollars and a new wasps we describe herein causes ~8 million dollars in direct damage to wax apple fruits there. This paper will be useful to those involved in wax apple production worldwide, biocontrol workers, and other scientists interested in this system. Technical Abstract: A new species of gall inducing wasp in the genus Anselmella Girault (Chalcidoidea Eulophidae Anselmellini) on Syzygium jambos (L.) Alston and Syzygium samarangense (Blume)Merr. L.M. Perry is described from Taiwan Anselmella jambukleptis Kresslein Gates sp. n.,along with sequences of the COI barcode region and 28s D2 ribosomal DNA. The new species is compared to Anselmella malacia Xiao & Huang, and Anselmella miltoni Girault, and incorporated into an updated key to species of Anselmella Girault. |
