Promotion of order Bunyavirales to class Bunyaviricetes to accommodate a rapidly increasing number of related polyploviricotine viruses. Journal of Virology. 98:e01069-24. 2024. https://doi.org/10.1128/jvi.01069-24. DOI: https://doi.org/10.1128/jvi.01069-24 Interpretive Summary: Continued and accelerated discoveries of viruses in the order Bunyavirales necessitate promotion of this order to the class Bunyaviricetes. This change requires additional sequence analysis and explanation of the changing taxonomy to the virology community. A timely update of these taxonomic changes is presented for research and regulatory virologists. Technical Abstract: Sequence analysis of ever-increasing viruses in the order Bunyavirales indicates that an order will not suffice to depict the evolutionary relationships of these viruses. In April 2024, following the annual International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) ratification vote on the newly proposed taxa, the order Bunyavirales was promoted to the class Bunyaviricetes. This new class currently includes two major orders: Elliovirales (Cruliviridae, Fimoviridae, Hantaviridae, Peribunyaviridae, Phasmaviridae, Tospoviridae, and Tulasviridae) and Hareavirales (Arenaviridae, Discoviridae, Konkoviridae, Leishbuviridae, Mypoviridae, Nairoviridae, Phenuiviridae, and Wupedeviridae). This article presents the updated taxonomy of Bunyaviricetes as currently accepted by the ICTV. |
