The wasp subfamily treated in this paper contains natural enemies critical for controlling plant-feeding caterpillars. Discerning evolutionary relationships among species in this subfamily is essential for predicting biological attributes of species that impact agriculture globally. Completely resolved, well-supported phylogenies are necessary to develop a stable classification for the subfamily, resulting in reliable retrieval of scientific information for included species. New trees depicting unique evolutionary relationships within the subfamily, based on novel genomic data, were reported in this paper. One tribe and three genera new to science were proposed and described, as were eight new species. This paper is useful to scientists conducting research on these wasps, as well as pest management and regulatory personnel. Technical Abstract: During the past two decades, the phylogenetic relationships and higher-level classification of the subfamily Rogadinae have received relevant contributions based on Sanger, mitogenome and genome-wide nuclear DNA sequence data. These studies have helped to update the circumscription and tribal classification of this subfamily, with six tribes being currently recognized (Aleiodini, Betylobraconini, Clinocentrini, Rogadini, Stiropiini, and Yeliconini). The tribal relationships within Rogadinae, however, still need to be fully solved, including the status of the previously regarded betylobraconine tribe Facitorini with respect to the members of Yeliconini. Here we conducted a phylogenomic analysis among the tribes of Rogadinae based on genomic ultraconserved element data (UCE) and an extensive taxon sampling comprising three undescribed genera of uncertain tribal placement. Our almost fully supported estimate of phylogeny confirmed the basal position of Rogadini within the subfamily as well as a Facitorini (Yeliconini +Aleiodini) clade, which led us to propose the former group as a valid rogadine tribe (Facitorini stat. res). The Stiropiini, on the other hand, was recovered for the first time as sister to the remaining rogadine tribes except Rogadini, and Clinocentrini as sister to a clade with Betylobraconini + the three undescribed genera. The relationships recovered and morphological examination of the included material led us to place the latter three new genera and the recently described genus Gondwanocentrus within a new rogadine tribe, Gondwanocentrini trib. nov. We described these genera (Ghibli gen. nov., Racionais gen. nov., and Soraya gen. nov.) with two to three new species each (G. miyazakii sp. nov., G. totoro sp. nov., R. brunus sp. nov., R. kaelejay sp. nov., R. superstes sp. nov., S. alencarae sp. nov., and S. venus sp. nov.). A new species of Facitorini, Jannya pasargadae sp. nov., is also described. Our newly proposed classification expands to eight and 66 the number of tribes and genera within Rogadinae, respectively. |
