Technical Abstract: This is a book about the moths of the Devils River area in Texas on the border with Mexico. The author covers relevant topics such as classification, diversity, life cycle, cuticle and scales, body, color and pattern, sensory organs of the head, hearing, sound generation, and many other ecological interactions for the newcomer to moths. He provides several how-to chapters: mothing, identifications, and photography. The chapter on “The names and numbers of moths” explains the use of Hodges numbers to “tag” or “name” the moth species if a neophyte chooses not to use scientific names. It includes over 710 stunning images of 558 species of live moths, each with the scientific name and the Hodges species number.
