DOI: https://doi.org/10.1128/mra.01142-23 Interpretive Summary: A bacterium known as Staphylococcus saprophyticus is a common cause of human urinary tract infections. It can be acquired through consumption of meat and poultry, and it colonizes the gastrointestinal tract, and then can be accidentally transferred to the urinary tract. To gain an understanding of the ability of Staphylococcus saprophyticus to cause illness, the complete sequence of the genome (the complete set of genes of an organism) of this strain was determined. A total of 2628 genes were found in this bacterium. The genomic information from this strain is useful for understanding the disease-causing ability of this bacterium, as well as for developing effective mitigation strategies. Technical Abstract: Staphylococcus saprophyticus, a common contaminant of foods, causes urinary tract infections in humans. Here, we report the draft genomic sequence for Staphylococcus saprophyticus ATCC 49453, which is currently being used in food safety research. |
