Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) has a complex aneuploid polyploid genome. Sugarcane seedlings are grown from crosses of parents with divergent genome content. Evidence suggests that DNA content affects sugarcane growth traits. To evaluate this, the genetic content of 22 parents identified through flow cytometry from 51 crosses was correlated with the seedling selection rates and ratings. The only significant correlations of genetic material and seedling ratings were between female GC and density ratings (-0.32), and the absolute difference in GC and density ratings (-0.31). There were no significant correlations between GC and selection rates. But there were some significant correlations between female GC and fuzz seed yield (-0.23) and the total GC and estimated viable seed (0.19). Data indicate that sugarcane fertility may be affected by GC.
