Interpretive Summary: Rainier Russet is a new potato variety that was released in 2020. It has large oblong to long shaped tubers with yield similar to Ranger Russet and Russet Burbank, two industry standards. The marketable yield is higher than these standards. The variety has high levels of the phytonutrients such as antioxidants and protein. Rainier Russet has higher merit scores for processing as French fries and is higher in fresh merit scores for table stock potatoes than either Ranger Russet or Russet Burbank. It is resistant to the diseases common scab, Fusarium dry rot and is moderately resistant to early blight and Verticillium wilt on the foliage. It is less susceptible to internal defects such as hollow heart and external defects such as secondary growth and growth cracks.

Technical Abstract: Rainier Russet was commercially released in 2020 as a medium- to late-maturing selection with oblong to long, large russeted tubers. With total yields similar to Ranger Russet and Russet Burbank, U.S. No. 1 yields are higher. Rainier Russet has high levels of antioxidants and protein, high specific gravity, excellent fry color, low acrylamide, and few internal and external tuber defects. Post-harvest merit scores for processing quality is higher than Russet Burbank and Ranger Russet and fresh merit scores are similar to Russet Norkotah in the Western Regional Potato Variety Trials. Rainier Russet is resistant to Common Scab (Streptomyces scabies) and Fusarium dry rot (F. sambucinum & F. solani var. coeruleum) and moderately resistant to Early Blight (Alternaria solani) and Verticillium wilt (Verticillium dahliae). When compared to Russet Burbank, tubers are less susceptible to hollow heart/brown center, secondary growth, growth cracks, and internal brown spot with similar blackspot bruise potential.
