Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes are naturally present in plant and animal tissues. The natural abundance of d13C and d15N is a useful tool to track the fate of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) when having binary mixtures of C3 and C4 plants. In the Southeastern U.S., there are some examples of these binary mixtures that are relevant to producers, including bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flügge), perennial peanut (Arachis glabrata Benth.) and bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.], alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.). Stable isotopes can be useful indicators of biological processes including biological N2 fixation, soil organic matter formation, diet composition, botanical composition, and greenhouse gas emissions. Our objective is to provide a summary of the results from 2015 to 2022 of isotopic composition across several sample types collected at the University of Florida North Florida Research and Education Center Stable Isotope Laboratory. Data presented include forage, soil, and animal samples (feces, red blood cells, and plasma), and methane from soils and animals.
