Title: Lineodes Guenée (Crambidae: Spilomelinae) of Peru: New reports of larval feeding on Solanaceae, new species, and nomenclatural actions

Interpretive Summary: Many species of snout moths are pests of crops in the nightshade plant family. Three species of snout moths all belonging to one group were discovered feeding on the nightshade plant family in Peru, specifically on tomato, aji, sweet pepper, and tobacco. New species from Peru are also described. The distribution of the eggplant leafroller moth in the Western Hemisphere is provided based on confirmed specimens at The National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution. Images of adults and their genitalia, as well as some of the immatures, are provided. This research is important for targeted development of management and control, and identification by quarantine personnel at U.S. ports.

Technical Abstract: Three species were discovered feeding on four solanaceous host plants in Peru, L. integra Zeller on tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.), L. undulata Walsingham on aji (Capsicum baccatum L.) and sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.), and Lineodes ravenalis Vergara and Solis, new species on wild tobacco (Nicotiana glauca Grahan.). Lineodes integra, the most well-known and widely distributed species in the Western Hemisphere, reportedly feeds on a wide diversity of solanaceous plants, but these are the first reports of host plants for L. undulata and L. ravenalis Vergara and Solis, new species. This is the first report of L. undulata since it was described from Peru over 100 years ago. Additional new Peruvian Lineodes species, Lineodes leuschneri Solis, new species, and Lineodes exquisitella Solis, new species, discovered at the National Museum of Natural History, Washington, D.C,. are described. A lectotype is designated for Lineodes contortalis Guenée, 1854 (lectotype designation). Lineodes pulchralis Guenée, 1854, (new combination) is transferred to Aulacodes Guenée, 1854, in the Acentropinae and is the senior synonym of Aulacodes caepiosalis (Walker, 1859) (new synonym). Images of adults and their genitalia, as well as some of the immatures, are provided.
