Interpretive Summary: The International Committee on the Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) develops, refines, and maintains a universal taxonomy of viruses. Updates and revisions to viral taxonomy are required periodically to account for new information and discoveries. An international group of scientists reviewed a family of viruses called the Potyviridae and agreed on several changes. Two new genera and 35 new species were added, bringing the total to 12 genera and 240 species. This article presents the updated taxonomy of Potyviridae as now accepted by the ICTV. This information will be utilized by virologists and regulatory officials worldwide to ensure that viruses can be correctly identified, and their relationships to other viruses can be understood.

Technical Abstract: The family Potyviridae includes plant viruses with single-stranded, positive-sense RNA genomes of 8–11 kb and flexuous filamentous particles 680–900'nm long and 11–20'nm wide. Most genomes are monopartite but those of members of the genus Bymovirus are bipartite. Genomes have a VPg covalently linked to the 5'-end and for most of them the 3'-terminus is polyadenylated. Genomes encode a large polyprotein that is self-cleaved into a set of functional proteins, and another small protein produced from the genomic RNA in the genome as a trans-frame protein. Gene order is generally conserved throughout the family. Genera are distinguished by the host range, genomic features and phylogeny of the member viruses. Some members cause serious disease epidemics in cultivated plants. The family Potyviridae now has 12 genera and 240 species, an addition of 2 genera and 35 species since the 2017 profile report. This article is a summary of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) Report on Family Potyviridae, which is available online. This article and online report present the updated taxonomy of the Family Potyviridae as now accepted by the ICTV.
