With the global evolution of gene banking there is a need for a document that details factors that gene bank managers should consider. Therefore chapter provides an overview of the technical and policy issues to be addressed in developing a national gene bank. A number of U.S. experiences are presented in the chapter including: how the U.S. collection has been used to date, successes of its use, and how genetic diversity might be sampled for the gene bank. Upon publication, FAO will publish in all official languages, thereby increasing the scope of readership.
