Interpretive Summary: All 555 native and non-native weevil species reported in the Hawaiian Archipelago are listed and the data explained. The taxonomy and classification for each species has been updated and for all endemic weevils, comprehensive data on their biology and occurrence is included. Ten new weevil records are the result of a concerted effort to capture specimen label data from natural history collections. This resource is the single source of data currently available to determine potential invasive weevil species in Hawai'i and will assist state, federal, private, and University collaborators with conservation management efforts aimed at protecting and monitoring the vulnerable local weevil fauna, especially endemic bark beetles, while attempting to control and manage the invasive Coffee Berry Borer and other invasive species in Hawai'i. Technical Abstract: Weevils are among the most dominant phytophagous insects in the Hawaiian Archipelago. A total of 555 native and non-native weevil species are catalogued and annotated for the Hawaiian Islands including leeward and outlying Johnston, Pheonix, and Wake Islands. Included are 354 endemic or indigenous weevils, 28 varieties, and 173 adventive or quarantine weevils. For each species, the taxonomy and classification has been updated to reflect recent synonyms and transfers. For the native species, biological, distribution, and type locality and depository information has been included. Lateral habitus images are included for 61 species, in many cases providing the first publicly available image of endemic weevils. Ten new weevils are recorded as well as 15 new individual island records. Six species of Hawaiian weevils are confirmed extinct and a conservative estimate of 21 weevil species are probably extinct. Recently collected examples of Dryophthorus distinguendus suggests this species to still be extant. |
