Technical Abstract: Osteoporosis or the occurrence of spontaneous fractures results from loss of bone mineral that usually takes place over many years. Hereditary and environmental factors contribute to bone mass and rates of bone loss. In women, loss of estrogen at menopause is associated with accelerated bone loss over about a 5 year period. This chapter describes several important environmental or lifestyle factors that influence bone health, calcium and vitamin D nutrition, exercise, body weight, smoking and alcohol use.
