Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This talk will review three recent research areas related to cottonseed quality and processing. The first area is the processing changes that will be needed to realize the potential additional value of low gossypol cottonseed. These seeds will potentially allow for a streamlining of the oil extraction process as crude oil color-set issues should be less problematic. The defatted meals from the processing of these seeds should be beneficial to other feeding markets (poultry and aquaculture) and for use as a food ingredient. However, these benefits will also require modifying the current oil extraction process to achieve this value. Second, an update of the development of non-GMO high-oleic acid seed oil cottonseed germplasm lines will be reviewed. The identification of wild germplasm with higher than normal levels of oleic acid and the breeding strategy to move these into agronomic lines will be discussed. Third, recent studies of seed hardness will be reviewed, as seed damage is becoming a increasing concern for cotton ginners.
