Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This chapter summarizes the impact of vitamin D deficiency on adult bone and muscle health and discusses whether the effect of vitamin D on fall risk contributes to its benefit on fracture prevention. Fall prevention is essential in fracture prevention at higher age. Evidence from randomized-controlled trials is reviewed for fall and fracture prevention based on recent meta-analyses. These meta-analyses consider the role of the dose of vitamin D administered, the type of dwelling (free living versus nursing home), and treatment interval. Finally, trial and epidemiological data will be reviewed to estimate the serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) level needed for optimal bone and muscle health.
