Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Xylella is a genus of Gram negative bacteria causing many economically important plant diseases. There are two species in the genus, X. fastidiosa with three subspecies and X. taiwanensis. X. fastidiosa is well known for causing grapevine Pierce’s disease (PD) in California and southeastern United States. X. taiwanensis causes pear leaf scorch disease in Taiwan and currently not in U. S. Both bacteria are difficult to culture in artificial media. Research on these bacteria is challenging. This chapter is to provide practical laboratory guides for Xylella research. It will benefit the field of bacteriology, plant pathology, and vector entomology.
