Interpretive Summary: The U.S. Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service (ARS) effort to broaden the genetic base of soybean in North American soybean breeding programs is important to have the resources needed to meet future problems that reduce soybean yield and profitability in the U.S. Soybean line DB0638-70 was developed and released by the ARS, Stoneville, Mississippi, U.S.A. as a high-yielding line derived from the Japanese cultivar Gogaku which is resistant to the major disease frogeye leaf spot. It was tested in multiple environments across the southeastern U.S. DB0638-70 had similar yield as high yielding commercial checks AG 4703 and AG 4907. This line is a benefit to growers and consumers because it can be used by soybean breeders to develop new varieties. As far as we know, Gogaku has not been used by U.S. breeders. It may be a novel source of useful traits in addition to frogeye leaf spot resistance and high yield.

Technical Abstract: The release of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] germplasm line ‘DB0638-70’ is part of an effort to broaden the genetic base of soybean germplasm in North American soybean breeding programs. DB0638-70 was developed and released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service, Stoneville, Mississippi, U.S.A. as a conventional determinate maturity group IV high-yielding germplasm line. It is an F5 derived line from the cross of USDA-ARS germplasm release ‘DT98-9102’ x Japanese cultivar ‘Gogaku’ (PI 594172 A). It was tested in multiple environments in ARS trials in Mississippi and Tennessee, the United Soybean Board Southern Diversity Yield Trial Project, and the USDA Uniform Soybean Tests – Southern States. Over 14 trials across six locations in the Diversity Tests, DB0638-70 was not significantly different from commercial high yielding checks AG 4703 and AG 4907 for yield, respectively. Over 19 trials the Uniform Tests, DB0638-70 yielded 95% and 92% of the commercial high-yielding checks AG 4632 and AG 4933, respectively. DB0638-70 is resistant to the common soybean disease frogeye leaf spot (Cercospora sojina Hara). This germplasm line can be used as an elite parent to improve yield and enhance genetic diversity.
