Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Tile drainage of agricultural cropland is necessary to maintain production yet facilitates loss of nutrients to freshwater bodies and ultimately to coastal receiving bodies. The USDA-ARS Soil and Water Management Research Unit in St. Paul, MN, conducts research to reduce the loss of nutrients from the Upper Mississippi River Basin. This presentation provides an update of recently published and ongoing projects including: reduction in sediment, TSS, and nitrate losses on a large dairy; denitrifying bioreactor work at lab, pilot, and field scales; and recovery of anions from agricultural and urban water sources.
