Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: In this communication, we present the proposed guidelines for production of plants tested free of all systemic pathogens of concern. We initiate by testing Generation 1 (G1, mother) plants for all known systemic pathogens of berry crops that have the potential to cause disease using high throughput sequencing and describe the steps to safeguard the material through the propagation process. This includes the development of best management practices and implementation of standards agreed upon by all states that participate in the programs. The guidelines were developed after multi-year discussions between researchers, state regulatory personnel and representatives from berry nurseries followed by three-year pilot studies to determine the feasibility of implementing the rules in a commercial nursery setting. The end product will be effective and harmonized certification guidelines for berry nursery stock production in the United States.
