Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, was discovered infesting maize in São Tomé and Principe and Nigeria in early 2016. The pest species has since been discovered in almost every country in sub-Saharan Africa. Fall armyworm is migratory in North America, moving in the spring from southern overwintering areas in Florida and Texas to as far north as southern Canada. However, its movement in Africa is unknown. A sex pheromone trapping network is currently being organized so that population densities can be measured throughout the year. Research in Togo with different traps and lures will determine the best available monitoring tools for this network.
