Interpretive Summary: Accurate scientific names of plants are essential for communication about them. Two tropical Southeast Asian tree species in the laurel family were described and named in 1913 and 1960, but because of similar publication errors confusion exists about the specimens (known as the “types”) upon which these names were based. The set of rules that govern the scientific names of plants, known as the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants, provides guidance to help address this kind of problem. To preserve the identities of the names given to these tree species, the confusing details of their type specimens are clarified in this paper. This research will be used by botanists who need to communicate about these trees in the laurel family.

Technical Abstract: There is confusion on the type collection of the name Nothaphoebe baviensis Lecomte, which had been cited either as Balansa 1445 or as Balansa 2445. We clarified this confusion by checking both collections. It turned out that the type is Balansa 2445, and Lecomte made an error in citation of the type in the protologue. Duplicates of the collection Balansa 1445 actually consist of a mixture including materials of the Sapindaceae and the Primulaceae. In addition, we found that the type collection of C. laotica Airy Shaw is Kerr 20893 but not Kerr 20983, the latter was cited in the protologue. These problems were clarified and the errors were corrected.
