Response to Bittencourt et al (On xylem hydraulic efficiencies, wood space-use and the safety-efficiency tradeoff). New Phytologist. 211(4):1156-1158. Interpretive Summary: This letter is a peer-reviewed response to an article that was submitted to New Phytologist (Bettencourt et al), commenting on paper that we published earlier this year in the same journal. The comments were are largely positive, and thus, the purpose of our response here is to point out particular research directions (as proposed by Bittencourt et al) that we feel are worthwhile. These include: strengthening their proposed statistical approach, focusing on wood tissues that are not directly involved with water transport, and understanding the ‘currency’ with which we should evaluate hydraulic failure.
