Technical Abstract: Animal facilities are significant contributors of gaseous emissions including ammonia (NH3) and nitrous oxide (N2O). Previous versions of the Integrated Farm System Model (IFSM version 4.0) and Dairy Gas Emissions Model (DairyGEM version 3.0), two whole-farm simulation models developed by USDA-ARS, had an emission model for simulating NH3 emissions from open lot facilities, but this component was found to perform poorly in simulating emissions for lots located in dry climatic regions. In addition, N2O emission for open lots was approximated using an emission factor, which neglected effects of climate and manure pack conditions. A new component model was developed that uses a process level simulation of the open lot to greatly improve the prediction of NH3 and N2O emissions for the full range of climate. Effects of temperature, precipitation and manure pack moisture are simulated by incorporating newly developed routines for urea hydrolysis, urine surface infiltration, mineralization, nitrification, denitrification, and leaching. With these processes modeled and integrated, IFSM and DairyGEM now simulate both NH3 and N2O emissions for open lots as a function of N amounts and forms, climate, and manure pack conditions. Reference manuals, help systems and the user interfaces for both the IFSM and DairyGEM software were revised and new versions of each farm model (IFSM version 4.1 and DairyGEM version 3.1) were released. Both software packages are distributed worldwide through internet download for use in education and research.
