Interpretive Summary: Cotton, being an important cash crop and a significant raw material for the textile manufacturing, contributes to one of the top three largest industries, worldwide. In order to sustain and possibly grow the cotton industry, especially in the current environment where the manufactured fibers, such as polyester and rayon, are gaining a greater-than-cotton fiber growth/market share, it is imperative to advance the technical knowhow and knowledge of all aspects of the cotton industry. To promote a greater use of cotton in nonwovens, a dictionary of the nonwovens terms and terminologies is expected to aid.

Technical Abstract: A need for a comprehensive dictionary of cotton was assessed by the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC), Washington, DC. The ICAC has selected the topics (from the fiber to fabric) to be covered in the dictionary. The ICAC has invited researchers/scientists from across the globe, to compile a comprehensive dictionary of the terms and definitions involved in all aspects of cotton-related science and technology. This contribution to the dictionary deals with commonly used terms and terminologies in nonwovens.
