Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This report is a cooperative venture involving state agricultural experiment stations and the Agricultural Research Service. The purpose of the nursery is to evaluate advanced barley germplasm for suitability as malting barley for the upper Midwestern U.S. Eight locations contributed useable data for the report. Average planting date was May 11th, about two weeks later than the 30-year average, while average heading date (July 4th) was a week later than the 30-year average (June 27th). Average planting date was three days later than last year, while heading date was four days later. Average yield (4995 kg/ha or 92.8 bu/a) was better than both the 30-year average (4457 kg/ha) and last year's average of 4510 kg/ha. Entries with the best yields were SR460, M156, 2ND27705, 2B059-3425, ND26891. Average test weight was 64.4 kg/hl, much better than it was last year and better than the 30-year average of 61.3. Entries with the highest test weights were 2ND30639, 2ND28065, Conrad, 2ND30724, and Pinnacle. Lodging data were reported from two locations. Average plant height was 78.9 cm. Shortest entries were 2ND30724, Conrad, 2ND30639, ND29380, 2B05-0811. Disease data from the Cereal Research Centre in Morden MB are included, as is a summary of data from the nursery grown at Aberdeen, ID.
