The impact of fruit and vegetable intake on weight management. In: Gill, T., editor. Managing and Preventing Obesity: Behavioural Factors and Dietary Interventions. Cambridge, UK: Woodhead Publishing. p. 59-78. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Fruit and vegetables (FV) are important sources of phytochemicals, dietary fiber, and low energy density, and their consumption may be protective against obesity. Despite these potential benefits of FV consumption on human health, rates of FV intake remain low throughout the world. This chapter reviews studies published in the last ten years on the effect of FV intake on weight management in obesity prevention research. There was no evidence that increased FV intake facilitated weight management for obesity prevention among children, in part because the analyses were not designed to test that hypothesis. Mediating variable analyses are needed in existing or future trials to test this possible effect. |
