Interpretive Summary: This editorial represents a summary of peer-reviewed research articles that are compiled under a unifying theme: vaccination against Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis, the agent that causes Johne’s disease. These articles, ten in all, will be published together as an eBook and this article will represent the opening paper to the eBook. The publisher has asked myself and a co-author to write the editorial in advance of eBook assembly. This article presents a brief background on earlier vaccination efforts in the field and then centers on current efforts from the Johne’s disease integrated research consortium to identify a live-attenuated vaccine strain. The article may be of use to animal producers or researchers interested in vaccine approaches for Mycobacterium.

Technical Abstract: In this article, we summarize current research on the state of vaccination against Johne’s disease. We promote the use of live attenuated vaccine candidates over subunit approaches, but don’t wholly discount other strategies. We conclude by suggesting new research directions that may make the highest impact in this area.
