Interpretive Summary: The number of described species in the plant pathogen genus Phytophthora has essentially doubled in the past 10 years and is continually expanding. This manuscript provides some background on morphological taxonomy of the genus as well as suggestions on the use of molecular tools for species identification. An overview of the evolutionary relationships among the species is presented along with a discussion on the current approaches used in this type of analysis.

Technical Abstract: The number of described species in the plant pathogen genus Phytophthora has essentially doubled in the past 10 years and is continually expanding. This manuscript provides some background on the genus and discusses morphological features used for species identification. More contemporary means of species identification using molecular tools such as DNA sequence analysis is also discussed and references provided for publically available databases that can be used for this purpose. An overview of the phylogenetic relationships among the species is presented along with a discussion on the current approaches used in this type of analysis. The loci that have been sequenced for this analysis are discussed and suggestions made on which ones are the best to use for this purpose. Methods of analysis are also discussed with an emphasis on approaches to use to clarify the relationships among closely related species.
