Molecular characterization and phylogenetics of a reassortant H13N8 influenza virus isolated from gulls in Mongolia. Virus Genes. DOI: 10.1007/s11262-014-1083-7. Interpretive Summary: A rarely identified influenza A virus of H13N8 subtype was isolated in Central Asia. We found the virus to be a reassortant avian influenza virus (AIV) from gulls in the Northern Hemisphere. We studied the pathogenic potential of such viruses. The data are very important for evolutionary ecology of gull-specific viruses; for the investigation of interspecies transmission and emergence of novel influenza viruses in wild nature. Technical Abstract: A double reassortant H13N8 influenza A virus was isolated from gulls in Mongolia. The basic virological characteristics were studied. Complete genome sequence analysis indicated the complicated evolutionary history. The PA gene belongs to classical Avian-like lineage and more likely originated from non-gull avian virus pool. Data confirm the state of extensive geographic mosaicism in AIV from gulls in the Northern Hemisphere. |
