Interpretive Summary: Salmonella is a major foodborne pathogen and is responsible for a significant number of illnesses and deaths among humans and domesticated animals worldwide. This pathogen is often isolated from dairy cows and dairy farm environments. Twenty-seven Salmonella isolates from a dairy farm in Pennsylvania were sequenced. The isolates represent seven different serotypes or groups and they were all obtained from dairy cows on the study farm or from heifers at a separate facility where the young animals are raised. The purpose of this paper is to report the genomes of these isolates. This information will be of interest to other scientists and regulatory agencies.
Technical Abstract: Here we report draft genomes of twenty-seven isolates of Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica representing the seven serotypes isolated from cows in a Pennsylvania dairy herd, the farm on which they were reared, and the associated off-site heifer-raising facility over an eight year sampling period. The genome set includes 18 Salmonella Cerro isolates, 2 S. Kentucky and S. Typhimurium var. 5- isolates, and one each of S. Montevideo, S. Muenster, S. Enteriditis, S. Oranienburg, and S. Give.
