Interpretive Summary: Cultivated peanut is an economically important crop throughout the world. Peanut is susceptible to many pathogens, with most damage being caused by fungi. Soilborne fungi cause diseases that adversely affect peanut health and productivity throughout the growing areas of the United States. Diseases such as pod occur in all U.S. peanut-producing areas, while others such as Sclerotinia blight are limited to certain geographic regions. Sclerotinia blight is of major concern to peanut producers in the southwest U.S., Virginia, and North Carolina. Depending upon severity of field infestation, yield losses due to such soilborne diseases may be as high as 50%. Sustainable peanut production in the southwestern U.S. demands that cultivars grown there possess certain characteristics including 1) a high oleic/linoleic acid ratio (market mandated) which increases peanut product shelf life, and 2) resistance to multiple diseases. The first high oleic Spanish cultivar release, OLin, was the result of collaborative efforts between Texas AgriLife Research, USDA-ARS, and Oklahoma State University. This report describes the characteristics of ARSOK-S1 germplasm which these three institutions cooperatively released in 2013 to provide breeding programs with a source of high oleic Spanish-type peanut that has enhanced resistance to Sclerotinia blight and pod rot when compared to OLin.
Technical Abstract: The high oleic Spanish peanut (Arachis hypogaea L. subsp. fastigiata var. vulgaris) germplasm line ARSOK-S1 was developed cooperatively between the USDA Agricultural Research Service, Texas AgriLife Research, and Oklahoma State University, and was released in 2013. ARSOK-S1 (tested early as TX996784) is the product of a fourth back-cross between the recurrent parent Tamspan 90 and F435-1-1, the donor of the high oleic trait. Field performance testing in Oklahoma and Texas indicates that ARSOK-S1 has significantly enhanced resistance to Sclerotinia blight and pod rot, two diseases prominent in the southwestern U.S. but also prevalent across many U.S. peanut growing regions. The purpose for releasing ARSOK-S1 is to provide breeding programs with a source of high oleic Spanish-type peanut that has acceptable yield and grade along with enhanced disease resistance.
