Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Dr. Sigua was involved with two field visits of watersheds with different livestock production systems (poultry, swine, and beef/dairy cattle); one in the sub-basins of Pinhal River Watershed (October 23, 2008) and at the micro-basins of the Rio Pine Forest (October 29, 2008) where studies of assessing microbiological water quality with animal-based agriculture are being conducted. Different sampling sites representing different agricultural land uses (e.g., dairy cattle; dairy cattle + pigs + crops; pigs + poultry + crops; dairy cattle + pigs + poultry + crops + human; dairy cattle +pigs + crops) are being sampled bi-weekly since August 2006. On October 24, 2008, he was invited to give a seminar presentation entitled “Managing Livestock Operations to Protect Streams and Rivers: Outlook and Options” at the Second South Environmental Congress, University of Concordia, Santa Catarina, Brazil. This presentation was attended by students who were majoring in environmental engineering and biology, faculty and researchers at the university. On October 27, 2008, he gave a seminar presentation entitled “Protecting Streams and Rivers: Animal-Based Agricultural Problems, Constraints and Outlook” at the auditorium of the Embrapa Swine and Poultry National Research Center. Seminar was attended by researchers and scientists at the research center and several representatives of the agro-industries of the region who were interested in the environmental theme of animal production. On October 30, 2008, he gave an invited seminar presentation entitled “Managing Cow-calf Operations to Protect Lakes and Rivers – Environmental Researches in the Subtropical Agricultural Research Station, USDA, Brooksville, FL” at the Embrapa Southeast Cattle Research Station in Sao Carlos, Brazil. |
