Interpretive Summary: Citrus contains a variety of nutrients that may have health benefits. We collected citrus production and consumption data and used it to estimate the amount of these nutrients that are currently consumed. We then compared the amount of nutrients found in citrus fruit to the amounts that have been used in studies that show health benefits. Based upon these data, recommendations for citrus consumption and barriers to consumption are discussed.
Technical Abstract: Citrus contains various nutrients and phytochemicals that may be beneficial for health. We collected citrus production and consumption data and estimated the amount of these compounds that are currently consumed. We then compared the amount of citrus and citrus-derived compounds that have been used in studies that suggest a health benefit to the amount typically found in citrus. Based upon these data, recommendations for citrus consumption as well as possible barriers to consumption are discussed.
