Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Lipoyl dioleoylglycerol is a lipophilic derivative of alpha-lipoic acid, a well-known antioxidant. Lipoyl dioleoylglycerol derived from vegetable oil maintains oily characteristics, suggesting potential use as a lubricant additive. Lipoyl dioleoylglycerol exists in an oxidized form with a disulfide bond that may increase binding affinity to the surface, suggesting an enhanced potential as a lubricant. Enzymatic synthesis where alpha-lipoic acid was combined with Candida antarctica lipase B (Novozym 435) in high oleic sunflower oil resulted in an oily mixture of lipoyl monooleoylglycerol, dilipoyl oleoylglycerol, and lipoyl dioleoylglycerol. Their relative distribution at the end of the synthesis was determined to be 17, 13, and 70 mol%, respectively. Their potential use in tribological studies will be discussed.
