Interpretive Summary: Cotton fiber development is a complex process which is influenced by many biochemical interactions. Understanding the developmental mechanism underlying cotton fiber development is not possible without detailed knowledge of the expansion of the fiber cell wall structure, mechanisms of synthesis of constitutive components, and regulation of these processes. Phytohormones are low-molecular weight compounds that modulate the interaction of cells and tissues at very low concentrations. We studied the effect of some of these phytohormones on fiber development in cottonseed. We found that these compounds alter the activity of various enzymes during fiber development. These findings are increasing our understanding of factors that control fiber development in cotton.
Technical Abstract: We determined the effect of exogenous indole-3-acetic acid, a-naphthylene-3-acetic acid and gibberellic acid (GA3) on the enzymatic activity of glucansynthase, peroxidase and cellulase in ovule development of naked L-70 and linted AN-Bayaut-2 cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) seeds. We isolated a protein–inhibitor of 37 kDa with pI 4.2 from integument tissue of naked cotton seeds. In addition, we studied its inhibitory activity on the biosynthesis of cellulose after GA3 treatment of ovules of linted cottonseed at 10-6 M. The results help to illuminate our understanding of lint development in cotton.
